About the Position:

The University Learning Center (ULC) is an important component of Undergraduate Academic Programs, in the Division of Academic Affairs at Cal State Fullerton. We believe that all learners need support that extends beyond the classroom to reinforce and amplify daily lessons. Research shows that students who engage in tutoring, and attend study groups, achieve higher grades than those who do not. Our focus is the undergraduate 100 & 200 level high-impact, bottleneck General Education courses. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as an Assistant Director, University Learning Center (Student Services Professional IV). The idea candidate should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Undergraduate Academic Programs, the Assistant Director of the University Learning Center (ULC) develops, designs, and implements direct tutoring instruction and learning assistance programs for students. Develops academic intervention programs for students who are struggling, failing to make satisfactory academic progress, and/or students who would improve their academic performance with learning assistance. Addresses the academic barriers to student success by overseeing tutoring assistance, study skills, and general services for students academically at risk or in academic difficulty. Recruits, hires, trains, and supervises student instructors/tutors. Oversees ULC budget. Works closely with university partners including colleges, academic departments, and other campus programs to identify courses and students that could benefit from ULC services. Develops tools to collect data to evaluate and assess ULC services. Other duties as assigned.


Essential Qualifications:
Bachelors degree or the equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution. Four years of professional student services work experience including experience advising students individually and in groups, as well as the analysis and resolution of complex student services problems. A masters degree from an accredited college or university in counseling, clinical psychology, social work or a job related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctoral degree from an accredited college or university and the appropriate internship or clinical training in a relevant field may be substituted for two years of professional experience.

General knowledge of the problems and methods of public administration, including organizational, personnel, and fiscal management. Knowledge of advanced statistical and research methods. Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, supervise, and organize programs and activities. Ability to interact with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the public. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action. Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters. Ability to complete assignments without detailed instructions. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to acquire knowledge of campus procedures, activities and of the overall organization.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.


Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in a related field. Demonstrated experience working with at-risk students and developing programs to improve their academic success. Ability to carry out complex and varied activities. Ability to make reasonable informed decisions to solve organizational and operating problems and to make recommendations for solutions on procedural and administrative policy decisions. Successful track record in team-oriented production environment. Superior communication, presentation, and negotiation skills.

Able to use software and to design and produce reports after collecting and evaluating appropriate data. Creativity in generating business solutions in a fast-paced global environment. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations. Excellent supervisory and team-building skills. Familiarity with certification by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA).
