Under general supervision, the Disabilities Counselor/Academic Learning Specialist will coordinate implementation of academic strategies/accommodations associated with ensuring compliance and equal access to students with disabilities. The Disabilities Counselor/Academic Learning Specialist will review diagnostic information and documentation of student disabilities in relation to learning and access, and their respective approved accommodations to inform the design and facilitation of both workshops and one-to-one strategy sessions on topics such as core academic skills, strategic reading, effective study strategies, and exam preparation; executive function skills like time management, attention/concentration, personal accountability, and motivation; how to overcome common academic challenges like perfectionism and procrastination; and other executive functioning skills related to college learning with a goal of enhancing student access to the college curriculum, retention.

The Disabilities Counselor/Academic Learning Specialist with work collaboratively with the Director, Coordinator, and Assistive Technology Specialist in support of student accommodations and may be required during peak times to generate student accommodation renewal letters and to review these accommodation letters with students.

The Disabilities Counselor/Academic Learning Specialist will:

  • Facilitate workshops, accountability programs, and other programs for students and, as requested by the Director and Coordinator of Disability Support Services for BHCC academic departments, co-curricular offices, and partner College offices in support of student access needs.
  • Meet one-on-one with students whose individual academic challenges can be better addressed outside of a group instructional setting, researching the disability, accommodations and offering individualized strategy skill building.
  • Assist students in developing academic plans and setting academic goals.
  • In collaboration with the DSS Assistive Technology Specialist, research, recommend and support student utilization of assistive technologies as assigned/approved for in relation to student accommodations, such as reading comprehension tools, and maintain online tools and programs to support students in the areas above.
  • Under general supervision, participate in the streamlining of dept. processes and policies, including meeting with student walk-ins as needed to address questions in relation to their accommodations.
  • Participate fully in the College academic community: Work closely with departmental faculty and academic staff to provide support, training and coaching for students; liaise with Life-Map & Advising and the Counseling Center to target academic support offerings for at-need students..
  • Maintain records, provide data reports, and perform other activities and duties as assigned.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Act a primary resource for an assigned caseload of students with documented disabilities and their faculty to support students' management of their program requirements, academic progress in relation to their approved accommodations.
  • Coordinate development/application of academic strategies in relation to accommodations to promote successful integration of students with disabilities within the college learning environment.
  • Support and implement programs/workshops to enhance the quality of the student experience; identify and encourage connection to campus resources, including tutoring and counseling centers.
  • Provide one-on-one support, coaching and assistive technology learning support for students with documented disabilities.
  • Produce and analyze data driven reports to analyze student use of services, technologies, progress, use of services
  • May determine accessibility eligibility and promote available resources and available options for students based on interactive process
  • Interpret and clarify local and College policies and procedures for students as needed.
  • During peak volume times, meet with student walk-ins and address their accommodation-related needs, including generating student accommodation renewal letters and faculty memos.
  • During peak volume teams, support the testing staff to support the facilitation of testing accommodations.
  • The Disabilities Counselor/Academic Learning Specialist is responsible for supporting the developing a network of academic services/resources for students with disabilities, ensuring institutional compliance with provisions of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1974 and coordinating appropriate accommodations for students with disabilities, promoting disability awareness both on and off campus.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serves on committees, process management, team collaboration, advisory councils as assigned. Performs other related duties as required/assigned.


Job Requirements:
  • Master's degree in Special Education, Education Psychology, Counseling, Deaf Education, or closely related field; with three (3) years experience and/or training that includes college-level learning disability services, learning disability assessment, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)/Section 504 compliance, development of policies/procedures, teaching, or curriculum development; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of assistive technologies that support student access and learning.
  • Demonstrated interest in and experience working with student and colleague populations that are highly diverse in terms of, for example, race, language of origin, ethnicity, nationality, religion, first-generation to college, age, socioeconomic background, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic abilities and interests.
  • Experience working educational environments with students with learning disabilities. Ability to interpret neuropsychological testing and advise on accommodations for learning. (Formal testing/assessment is not a responsibility of this position.)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent materials development and project management skills and data collection and reporting skills.
  • Knowledge of research on learners with disabilities and those who experience learning barriers related to processing and executive function.
  • Knowledge of best practices in the field of academic support, academic coaching, and liberal arts curricula.
  • Knowledge of/experience with academic support for specific populations of students, including but not limited to: first-generation, low-income students; students from under-resourced high schools; student athletes; international students; students with learning disabilities; English-language learners, a plus.
  • Experience with coordinating services to students with disabilities in educational settings, including identifying strategies, assistive technologies and other campus resources.
  • Knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities ACT, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act for accommodation determination in educational environments.
  • Competent in MS Word, Outlook, social media, web based applications and other online communication.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills and ability to work both on a dynamic team and independently.
  • Prior work with Community College Students.Experience with post-secondary educational environments.
  • Knowledge of and experience with development and use of online tools for academic support.
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical considerations for disability accommodations and processes in educational settings, including assistive technologies and accommodations utilized by students in higher education.
  • Knowledge of local, regional and national disability service organizations and associations for disability professions.


Additional Information:

Salary: $70,929.00 - $76,416.00 (Actual Salary Will Be Commensurate With Education and Experience in Accordance with MCCC/MTA Collective Bargaining Agreement.)
