Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience; academic year (nine-month basis).
Anticipated start: July 1, 2023, with the academic year beginning in September 2023. Degree requirements must be met by July 1, 2023 for employment effective July 1, 2023.

The Department of Languages and Applied Linguistics (https://language.ucsc.edu/) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a position in Japanese, focusing on applied linguistics, linguistics, second language acquisition, education, or any related areas of study. This position is authorized at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level. Significant training in second language acquisition and experience in coordination of Japanese language courses is desirable. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong record of research and promise of continued scholarly productivity. Candidates are expected to have native/near native proficiency in Japanese and should demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching (and developing) courses in Japanese, including all levels of Japanese language courses as well as advanced content courses. The successful candidate will also teach existing courses and develop new courses (in English) in the undergraduate major in Applied Linguistics and Multilingualism, may be asked to train and supervise graduate student instructors, will assist in the development of a graduate program in applied linguistics, and provide service to the department, campus, and community.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a clear commitment to understanding and articulating the issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion and must be able to work with students, staff, and faculty from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. We are especially interested in candidates whose professional activities (e.g., teaching and pedagogical strategies, research, mentoring, or other professional or public service) foster diversity, equity, and inclusion and contribute to the excellence of the academic community. These can take a variety of forms such as, but not limited to, effective pedagogical strategies used for the educational advancement of students in underrepresented groups; demonstrated contributions to the advancement of access and equal opportunity in education; and participation in activities that support the recruitment, retention, and success of scholars and students.
The chosen candidate will be expected to sign a statement representing that they are not the subject of any ongoing investigation or disciplinary proceeding at their current academic institution or place of employment, nor have they in the past ten years been formally disciplined at any academic institution/place of employment. In the event the candidate cannot make this representation, they will be expected to disclose in writing to the hiring Dean the circumstances surrounding any formal discipline that they have received, as well as any current or ongoing investigation or disciplinary process of which they are the subject. (Note that discipline includes a negotiated settlement agreement to resolve a matter related to substantiated misconduct.)
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in Japanese, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, or a related field and demonstrated record of research in applied linguistics and Japanese; demonstrated record of independent teaching at the college or university level. It is expected that the degree requirement will be completed by July 1, 2023.
